PRINCE2® Professional

Assessment overview

The PRINCE2® examinations include the PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner.
Candidates who have completed both of these qualifications then ask: “What next?”

Also organizations (e.g. HR professionals and Programme Managers) frequently ask how to distinguish the truly excellent or those with high potential from other project staff. For many organizations, it is essential to answer this question, who can really deliver change projects in a controlled environment.
That is where the PRINCE2® Professional assessment will help!

The PRINCE2® Professional qualification tests an individual's ability to run projects for real rather than just in theory. It requires the individual to work with others, deliver to tight deadlines, produce products, justify his/her views, persuade others and to be able to identify good solutions with plans to support them.
In order to test this, the PRINCE2® Professional qualification moves outside of the boundaries of the PRINCE2® method and syllabus, and includes globally recognized project management capabilities.

The PRINCE2® Professional qualification forms the natural progression on the development path for qualified PRINCE2® Practitioners wishing to demonstrate and attain recognition of their ability to manage a PRINCE2® project.

This qualification is not a training course and no training is provided! It should also be noted that the assessment process relies heavily on all candidates having a good level of knowledge of structured project management.

Prerequisites & Intended audience

The PRINCE2® Professional qualification is for individuals who want to show that they have more than just knowledge about PRINCE2® and can effectively manage a non-complex project across its whole lifecycle.

The PRINCE2® Professional qualification is therefore appropriate for:
Projectmanagement consultants
Project Managers
Project co-ordinators
Team Managers in larger projects

Suitable candidates will have experience of managing non-complex projects or will have been a team member of a more complex project. Candidates wishing to attend the PRINCE2 Professional must also have passed the PRINCE2® Practitioner examination.

Assessment content

The PRINCE2® Professional qualification assesses a candidate's capability to manage a non-complex PRINCE2® project across all aspects of the project lifecycle. The qualification is not designed to assess overall competence as a Project Manager as this is not possible out of the context of the project environment. It is an assessment at a given moment in time in a specific, somewhat artificial, but generally realistic environment.

The capabilities required of the candidate in applying their knowledge and experience are shown in the performance criteria below:
Prepare the Project Product Description
Prepare the outline Business Case
Design the project management team structure
Tailor corporate strategies
Perform product-based planning
Apply the risk management procedure
Apply the communication management procedure
Plan the project
Refine the Business Case
Prepare the Benefits Review Plan
Prepare an End Stage Report
Capture lessons learned
Prepare a Work Package
Apply the issue and change control procedure
Plan and conduct the Closing a Project process
Prepare an End Project Report (incl. Lessons Report)
Interpersonal skills
Manage team performance
Manage own performance

Candidates should note that they must not only demonstrate knowledge of PRINCE2® and project management, but also the capability to apply and use that knowledge!

Assessment material

Candidates will receive a Quality Management System for the sample organization in the case study, containing outlines of the PRINCE2 management products, such as the Business Case, Management Strategies, Registers and Work Packages.
No PRINCE2® manual is permitted during the assessment!

Assessment approach

The assessment takes place at a Assessment Centre, held over 2½ days.
All candidates must arrive at the venue on the evening before day 1 of the event. Throughout the 2½ days candidates are provided with opportunities to demonstrate evidence of their competence in managing a project using the PRINCE2® method, whilst providing evidence of broader competencies of a Project Manager.

There are 3 methods of assessment during the PRINCE2® Professional:
Group sessions (e.g. working together as a team to design the project management team for the project)
An individual written exercise (e.g. to create a Benefits Review Plan)
A one-to-one interview (e.g. an in-depth interview of 20 minutes to show the ability to tailor corporate strategies)

Each candidate will be assessed against the 19 performance criteria (mentioned above) using the following rating scale.
Level 0: Failed to present any relevant evidence
Level 1: Basic evidence, with one or two directly relevant examples
Level 2: Good evidence, with three or more directly relevant examples
Level 3: Extensive evidence, with six or more directly relevant examples

The scoring is not about a candidate's performance but about the reliability of the evidence demonstrated by a candidate.

Certification

Having gathered sufficient evidence of a candidate's capability, evaluators will recommend that the PRINCE2® Professional qualification will be awarded where the candidate gains:
At least a rating of 1 for each of the 19 performance criteria, and
An average score of 1.6 or greater across all 19 performance criteria.
If successful candidates will receive the internationally recognized PRINCE2® Professional certificate.
